Chrysler is a company that has gone through many life-threatening challenges but has survived through dogged determination. Indeed this is the same way one can describe founder Walter P. Chrysler who right from the beginning had to overcome serious obstacles to see his dream come true.

Chrysler History

It started with his first car being denied entry into the 1924 New York Auto show and so instead of giving up Chrysler parked his car outside but at the entrance of the show.

That car went on to become the very first car for the masses with 4-wheel hydraulic brakes and a 6-cylinder engine. The Chrysler corporation was born on 6th June 1925.

In 1928 the Plymouth brand also for the low priced end of the market was launched. It became hugely successful as did the pricier DeSoto brand which rolled out at about the same time.

Interestingly the Plymouth was the first real competitor to Henry Fords’ dominance of the huge new car market he himself created and in 1931 completely outclassed the Ford Model A with a better engine and futuristic look.

Mr Chrysler’s dream was to rival the then legendary General Motors with a brand for different market segments started with low priced ones to an expensive luxury make.

He achieved this by 1955 and on the way acquired the Dodge Brother’s auto company. The company Mr Chrysler founded faced its’ most serious challenge in 1979 shortly after the world fuel crisis of 1973 caused sales of large cars to plunge into oblivion.

The bail out by the US government that saved the company proved to be a wise investment and by the early 80s all the loans had been repaid and the company was aggressively back into profits.

Today the names Jeep and Dodge as well as Chrysler are associated with quality well-engineered unique cars that these days roll out of factories with the DaimlerChrysler name proudly displayed.
