Ssangyong started life as the Hadonghwan Motor Company and initially built only Jeeps for the United States army. Later the company expanded into manufacturing a wide range of other car makes. Ssangyong

Ssangyong History

The name changed to the current one (Ssanyyong Motor) after the Ssangyoung Business group took it over in 1988.

Then the famous Daimler-Benz made a major investment in Ssangyong Motor which birthed an alliance between the two entities that saw Ssangyong cars use Mercedes Benz engines.

The highly successful Musso (1990) was the very first Ssanyyong car to benefit from this relationship. This alliance later extended to light commercial vehicles in 1991 and to diesel engines, luxury passenger cars and petrol engines in 1993.

All this helped a great deal in launching the company very quickly into the highly competitive global market. Even a serious recession in the Asian markets in the 1990s did not stop the Ssangyong march to world recognition and glory.

Today the car maker has some real beauties in its’ fleet. They range from SUVs to RVs and Sedans. Ssangyong has some very strong representation in all these niches in the car market.

Its’ most popular brands at the moment are of course the Rexton and Actyon. Ssangyong cars are very popular all over Australia and we even have a Ssangyong 4×4 club.

There are of course dealers all over the country which means that if you opt for a car from this stable you will never be stranded for parts and service to keep it running in tip top shape.

The Smart car company based in Germany produces microcars and superminis. The cars are actually manufactured in France.

Smart Car

Smart Car History

Founded in 1994, the whole idea behind the car was to come up with a vehicle that was small and easy to park. The result was a car whose length was equal to the width of most cars, meaning that two or three Smarts can be parked in what would usually accommodate only a single car.

The whole idea was the brainchild of a Swiss watch manufacturer by the name of Swatch. CEO Nicolas Hayek went round looking for a car maker whom he could go into partnership with to produce the car.

He was turned down by General Motors who saw the project as unprofitable. He them teamed up with Volkswagen but the financial problems at the company then meant that the project never saw the light of day.

Hayek finally ended up at the most unlikely place where one would expect a tiny car to emerge from—Daimler Benz. A partnership between Swatch and Daimler Benz gave birth to the Micro Compact Car AG company in 1994.

But the Smart car was not an instant success. What followed were heavy losses and Swatch pulled out of the project. Today operations have been absorbed within the Mercedes Benz group.

The Smart car is surprisingly safe for its’ tiny size that seats only two (one passenger and the driver). This is because the main structure of the car is a very strong “cell” called the Tridion Safety Cell.

This tough safety cell creates a shell that is hard to break through and protects the passengers in the event of a collision. Smart has been available in Australia right from the beginning and is currently sold through Mercedes Benz dealerships in the country.

Most people have no idea where the Skoda car comes from. Actually its’ country of origin is the Czech Republic and Skoda is a pretty old car manufacturer.

Skoda

Skoda History

It was launched in 1894 when a bookseller called Vaclav Clement failed to get his bicycle repaired when he shipped it off to the manufacturers in Germany.

Instead the bicycle people in Germany were rude and insisted on an accompanying letter in German explaining what the problem with the bicycle was.

An angry Vaclav abandoned the book-selling business to start his own bicycle company with a friend. Amazingly their products became instant hits in the Czech Republic.

This swift success encouraged them to try their hand at cars and in the early 1900s produced their first effort in the Vorturette A. After a fire completely destroyed their factory in 1924, Vaclav’s company was suddenly in very serious trouble.

To emerge from the crisis, he went into a partnership with Skoda (which was then the largest industrial enterprise in the country.) And this is how he was able to continue manufacturing high quality cars.

The most successful Skoda ever was the Favorite of 1987 which has become wildly popular all over the world. Another important milestone was in 2005 when the Skoda Roomster won a five star safety award.

There is no denying that the reliability and quality of a Skoda is difficult to match and this may help explain why it is now the fastest growing brand in the highly competitive and crowded German car market.

Saab is Swedish and is actually an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktie Bolag which means (Swedish Airplane Corporation). And indeed as the name suggests this company started off manufacturing aircrafts only.

Saab

Saab History

During the Second World War Saab successfully built many bombers and jetfighters. It is interesting to note that Saab still manufactures very high quality aircrafts both for the military and civilians.

Indeed some of the names they use to name their aircrafts are also used for some Saab cars. The first car rolled out of the Saab factory in 1940 and was simply called Project 92.

It was a small affordable car with a 750cc engine and it sold well as the Saab 92. Saab was a pioneer in safety and this car was designed with a safety cage to protect passengers in the event of an accident.

Safety has always remained a very important feature in all Saab cars. For instance the 1958 Saab GT750 was one of the first cars to have factory-fitted seat belts. Again 1972 Saabs had a special bumper that could absorb impact.

But without doubt the most popular Saab ever has to be the Saab 900 which sold over 900,000 units and still remains very popular today. It was first produced in 1978.

In 1998 the company produced the Saab 9-3 which was essentially an improved version of the Saab 900. General Motors bought a 50 per cent stake in the car maker in 1989 and even with the partnership that followed with Subaru which has resulted in some Saab parts being supplied by Subaru, this car make has managed to retain its’ distinct identity.

The founder and main brains behind Renault was the gifted Louis Renault who from an early age developed a lot of interest in engines and electrical engineering.

Renault

Renault History

Although he was never anywhere near the top of his class, it was clear from a very early age that the young man was a very gifted engineer with ideas that were ahead of their time.

At the tender age of 20 Louis invented the world’s first gear box. Car makers quickly dumped the cumbersome chains and cogs of the time and took up Louis’ invention.

He later patented it and it was this invention that made him his fortune and ended up financing the Renault car company. In setting up the company Louis and his brothers got heavily involved in car racing where their superior cars easily won races and rapidly increased the popularity of the cars that they sold to the public.

It did not matter that Renault cars were priced very highly because customers were convinced that they were worth every franc. Even if they had to pay what was at the time the equivalent of 10 years of an average salary for a single Renault.

But even then Louis was not finished with his inventions and went on to patent the very first Turbo in the early 1900s. Renault, the company went on to manufacture a wide range of different cars after the First World War. The company had its’ hand on everything from cars to vans buses, trucks and even farm tractors.

Ship engines and aircraft engines were also churned out. To be able to keep up with this massive undertaking Louis purchased foundries ironworks and anything that reduced his reliance on outside suppliers. This also helped him maintain very high quality products from Renault.

After his death in 1944, the company became government-controlled but remained very successful. Today Renault and Nissan are partners and the car maker continues to be highly successful in the market.
