Inspired by an American World War II Jeep, the first Landrover was designed in 1947 in Wales by Maurice Wilks. The war had just ended barely 2 years earlier and the idea was to win foreign sales for the Rover Car company so as to gain a larger supply of then still rationed steel.

Landrover History

The rest as they say is history. Today almost every military in the world uses Landrovers. This car has won the hearts of many for its reliability and performance in tough terrain and rugged remote areas. Amazingly to date it remains unchallenged and unmatched for many useful functions and uses.

The alert marketing people at Landrover saw the demand in the market for a more luxury Landrover and so Range Rover was born in 1970. The new kid on the block quickly made its’ mark in the car market. This was followed by the launch of the Landrover Discovery in 1989 and despite its’ reliability problems at the beginning it was still able to get a firm foothold in the market which some analysts attribute to the deeply entrenched Land Rover name. A lesser car brand would probably not have gotten away with it the way the Discovery did.

Still quality took a giant leap when the Rover company was bought our by BMW. Later BMW sold Landrover to Ford and currently this well-loved brand is owned by Tata Trucks of India.

Landrovers have also been touted as being amongst the safest cars to drive in the world and what all this means is that this is a brand that we will be seeing in the car market for many years to come.
